Children

Swimming through the idling mind
Engine cranking, turning, stammering, and starting
Crying out through the cold New England morning
Breathing a disparate chiming of church bells
And clamoring of new birthing vestiges
Among the poplar and schematic picture books
Of children reading in the room beside the hill
Shepherded inside by flame and fire
Frothing at the bit of tenacious giggling
Laughing throughout
