first day open
swarms of human consumption
press through the tented streets,
from somewhere, the air is mingling
with bass drum beats and guitar droning
competing with the corner vendor
who’s warbling like a vireo,
selling bird-call whistles
the smell of barbeque and wolfgang puck
pizza, gyro stands and funnel cakes,
margaritas on the rocks and slushy lemon coolers,
moms with strollers and whining kids,
people with their dogs and trip-wire leashes,
slow-poke lookyluers causing traffic,
cell phone conversations, adult laughter
gulping down cups of cold tap beer and bottled water
commenting on sunshine, buying art
photography of third-world countries,
flowers, wind-chimes, bamboo fountains,
hand-made jewlery peddled every 10 feet-
toerings and amber earrings,
blown-glass necklaces and colorful hair beads,
metal sculpture, ceramic cats,
crafty crap doodles painted on birdhouses,
japenese silk art,
trumpet and saxaphone lamps,
newspaper and magazine subscriptions
no one will read,
radio stations and jolly-jump recreations….
just a field of sights and sounds and scents
for locusts razing summer.
