the fog is slow to retreat in the morning in the valley. down the path, warm berries grow, waiting for a child’s hungry curiousity. the vegetables grow in the garden, thanks, I’m all set; don’t need the supermarket. across the valley, at least a mile away, one other home – an older woman, alone. with pickled tomatoes that she willingly shares. a tree in our yard, complete w/ hammock and apple barrel – a fun and healthy game: bobbing for apples. down the way > the creek. clean enough to swim in, with trees and vines hanging over. inside the house, wooden floors. no phone. no tv. just public radio. the voices speaking about everything from current events to poetry. upstairs, some beds. outside, a water pump w/ freezing cold metally tasty water. and an outhouse.
