fetch

bouncing Labrador
and the perpetual ball
diving into waves
boundless want for chase
renewed by heave of owner’s hand
inspiring the race

a smaller Jack Terrier
for every throw, a blur of legs
working doubletime
to fetch the prize,
yet like a clever raven
he must trail from behind,
hop along

until the vacant moment
Labrador was shaking
salt of sea
from his black, wet coat,
a nab, clandestine fashion
stole the furry trophy
to be buried in the sand

satisfaction keeping
better than a bone
