~Equinox~ (a poem for the local rebel nighthawke on his birthday)

it is the autumnal equinox
and you are an ellipse
crossing the equator
as the sun begins to rise
at the south pole
after six months
of darkness.

imagine darkness and cold
lasting months.
the scientists have
reason to celebrate.
wouldn’t you, if it were
eighty below zero outside
followed by daybreak?

so, as the sun passes straight
overhead at the zenith —
the path of the shadow
is a straight line —
your art, verse
and compassion
somehow meld phrases
and vision together
explaining
why winter might be
colder than summer.

you are the hawke —

art on wings,
giving reason why
daytime can last
a half a year.

and today,
i celebrate you.
