Parent message is 340232
and always went
to see the show
maybe not the
greatest show on earth
but good enough for
the ghetto likes of me
they always set up
in a big open field
off route 35
somewhere between
bradley beach
and ocean grove
they never cleaned up
before the show left town
and i wondered
after they had gone
if the hay grew there
by magic
the clowns scared me too
and i never liked them
in my life nor
in or out of costume
and ladies with red hair
dressed in gauze and patches
like a scene from araby
full of grace
and dubious talent
gave me my first
love lessons when i had
an orgasm in my dreams
the big cats terrified
and fascinated –
no escape from the
big top if they got loose
but the most vicious
untamed creatures were
the barkers down the midway
who taught me to mark the marks
and that i was different from them

maybe not the greatest
show on earth
but it was good enough
and i missed it when
i grew up and into
circque d’ soleil
