Snickerdoodle

SooZen awakened me this morning
a sweet smile on her overnite face.

She was excited as a child
asking to open her gifts
that I lay under the small
tree so expertly decorated
with ornaments from
our first Christmas together.

That first Christmas tree
was a dried branch
picked up from some place
no longer remembered
and the ornaments were
purchased in Juarez.

We loved that ‘tree.’
We loved being together.

Today I started the coffee,
fresh ground ‘snickerdoodle’
that we picked up from
the “Coffee Emporium”
last week while shopping.

While the coffee was brewing
I picked out one of the gifts
and handed it to her…
she played dumb as to what it was
(she always knows what it is)
and slowly unwrapped the
overpriced paper – glittering
in the dim light of the morning.

She finally got her Ott
an overpriced, high quality lamp
for her beading, complete with
a magnifier for her tired eyes.

We enjoyed our first cup of coffee
waiting for Nathan to wake up.

Maybe we should’ve waited
and opened each present
each following day
so the season would last
longer than the ‘snickerdoodle.’
