Color Me Midnight

Color me midnight
blue tonight
though the big hand
is only on the nine
with the little hand
thirty minutes behind —
I was age sixteen before
I learned to tell time.
I stick with the belief
that clocks often lie.
Color me midnight
I’m blue tonight
fragile and fetal
in the iced moonlight
thinking of wrongs
that started out right —
of bridges I burned
dancing in the firelight.
I never could speak
as well as I write.
