life is a barrel full of monkeys

Parent message is 452148
outstretched arms,
curled and clawed
interlinked plastic make-believe limbs
holding fast to loops and doorknobs
or trapped inside
tightly-fitting top
childproof
for no reason
other than bad engineering
POP
and they scatter across the floor
colors making identities indistiguishable
from the carpet background
the god child stoops to make sense of it
fitting
linking
hanging
throwing them at his sister
one with a plastic mold defect
a flat piece of plastic attached to its elbow
where it used to be connected to
something
it’s twisted,
for a while,
and it starts to burn
and then slips off of itself
and goes to live under the couch
with the lost superball
and the dust bunnies
and coins
and, reduced, the monkey is whole
and goes to play with his friends.
