the half-dead african violets

The dying African violets on the window ledge
remind me how I’m standing
and leaning on the edge
of the sill
to watch for you outside.
and all the stars
are out tonight
twinkling primal
through the smoky city light
and the half-dead violets
glow electric in the dimness
soft velvet leaves
withered but green.
They’re alive
underneath.
I wonder
will you come
as I walk to the sink,
a plastic pot of violets in my hand.
