As If My Home Were Venice

They come from all over
These cats of yore
They prowl throughout the neighbourhood at night
But never venture near the shore
For my “roomate” puts out one bowl of food for one
stray cat
It attracts the whole neighbourhood, and I can’t keep them
at bay
Oh, calico shorthairs and long-haired scary cats of Halloween
Grey felines
And mysterious Morris oranges…
I recall standing on the white steps of Venice one afternoon
petting over a hundred homeless friends
Their meows and street livin’ purrs would never
end
And I see cats from the corner of my eye
At night
And look and they may not be there
Each night I return home and one is standing in front of her front door
As I head back to my place
Their eyes bore into me with a stare
And I wonder, why do some of them have to live their fate of life without a home?
Just like some humans
