A zen monk was with his disciple up in a mountain retreat when it began to snow. The weather got colder as the snow accumulated and they were running out of firewood to keep warm. Finally after the last of the firewood had been burned the zen monk grabbed the wooden statue of the Buddha and flung it into the glowing embers.

“You can’t do that! That’s the Buddha you are burning!” yelled the disciple.

“The Buddha is inside you,” the monk said. “not in the statue.”
