waiting for her fearsome arrival

steve stares out the window
into the granger township night
wearing a leather holster,
holding a glock in one hand,
ten-inch hunting knife in the other,
he smiles a thick grim smile, says,
if she shows up, i’ll be ready for her!
she being john’s ex-girlfriend, who
has sworn crooked vengeance upon him
for crimes of the heart. john of course
is nowhere to be found, done his
disappearing act, but we have every
reason to believe she’ll show
up at our front door, filled with
bloodlust, demanding to see him,
maybe screaming for his hide,
if that happens, i say, i’m out
the back door. if that happens,
steve says, i’ll shoot first &
ask questions later. hell hath
no fury like a woman scorned,
he says, but she aint gonna
drag me down with her. so we
wait, watching for headlights
in the driveway, walk on eggshells
waiting for her fearsome arrival
