i hadn’t known anything
up to that point.
nothing.
you held me in drunken
swimming arms,
nuzzled your hot lips into my neck
and said,
kate,
kate,
kate…
i love you deeper
than my soul is black.
and at that moment
i knew all there was to know.
how all clouds met in your being,
how you were the beginning and the end
of me.
then you kissed me,
led me by the hand to the dark attic
of a house that smelled like beer.
i looked into your eyes
and felt your love for me
and knew
it’d never be this way again.
your hand on the small of my back
was a goodbye,
your tongue on my thigh
was your personal thank you,
your soft kiss on my open lips
was the passing of your black.
i said to you, laying quietly beneath your weight,
you’ve ruined me,
you know that?
and you said,
there’s no way to ruin
this kate,
you kate.
and your tongue grazed
the inside of my lips
and i knew
you’d be gone when morning came.
