The Longest Day

Do I understand what today means to me,
Clear that anger from your eyes
Hold my hands to calm the heart,
Warm familiar feelings run from your fingers
Through my veins and find the hurt
Diluting each tense frown, taking
Comforts from pain slowing my haste down.

It’s too warm to concentrate
I catch my vision deceiving me in your face
Your name never lost but all words
Just distant echoes in my gaze,
In my gaze too many days gone by.
With all my effort I know now
To turn away and back only to smile.
