‘Not publishing is not an option’ said Carole Leigh Hutton, executive editor of the detroit free press

as her black out stricken reporters hit the streets with their laptops in tow, while dispatchers stayed behind to man the phones by candle light and took dictation from their colleagues. Then computer techs emailed by dial up finished articles to the editorial brain trust holed up in a make shift news room(Brighton) in the nearest county with power. From there it was passed on to page designers who had hauled their desktop computers to Brighton from their desks in Detroit. Finished pages were transmitted to plants in Battle Creek, Indianapolis, Toledo and Bowling Green. The papers were trucked back in time for normal delivery and sales. 325,000 copies about 60,000 less than normal of a token ad free 8-page edition.

The Literary Kicks message boards were active from 2001 to 2004.
