The way I understand the copyright law

Anytime you write a story, poem, song, or whatever, it is automatically copyrighted as soon as you write it, BUT, the purpose of registering a copyright is to PROVE you wrote it and WHEN you wrote it. Otherwise, even tho it’s yours, if someone steals it, you wouldn’t be able to prove it’s yours. One thing I would like to learn more about is: Now that we have the internet, it seems like posting something on the internet would be just as good as a copyright, because you could prove when it was posted. But I don’t know if that’s correct, so don’t assume it is. I would like to find out.
