School

I studied in the school of hard nothings
Sniffing glue and lighting things on fire
In the name of boredom
Looking to rock stars for salvation
And rotting my eyes out with television
Discovering what could be destroyed next
On the road to addiction
Chasing girls
But running when they began to chase back
Not knowing how to deal with them when they turned
But knowing how to make shotgun shell bombs
Ian’s older brother taught us
He learned how from Soldier of Fortune magazine
He was cool
We’d fill the hours
Seeing who could spit farthest
Inflicting pain
Carrying knives
Enduring ‘rites’ into ‘manhood’
Ritualistically scarring ourselves
Without ritual
Without reason
With only time to coax us on
Waiting out in back of the beer store
For Steve’s big brother to come out with our beer
So we could ‘go get wasted’ behind the school
It’s funny
We tried so hard to get in
At night…
On the weekends…
But tried so hard all week
To get out
Of that school
That school where we learned
The best ways not to learn
While apathetic pay-checkers
Scratched meaningless numbers on the board
As we tried to get a peek up Lisa Tuey’s mini skirt
Or give Corey Wilk a ‘mega-wedgie’
While looking forward to Friday
When we would score some bud
Drink lots of beer
And walk around aimlessly
Looking for nothing to do
