Silent Shame

Her beauty is fading
flesh like soil
cracked and dry
Her tears flow
like poisoned streams
polluting…seeping
deeply to her core

Her heart like the sun
burns with anger
raging at what we have done

The breath of her soul
wintry with chilling disdain
charges us with deliberate destruction
as she echoes our shame
She cries no more

Cleansing tears
refreshed the air
nourished the soil
flowing in streams and rivers
pooling in lakes…
She cries no more

Her breath
harvested by greed
labors heavily corrupted with
the foul residue of our days end
the trees are dead or dying
She cries no more

Eternal mother and child
a gift entrusted to us
lies fractured and broken
by an abusive world
she cries no more

Her death will be ours
and that of our people
Protect the birth of our future
tread on her soil lightly
replenish her tears
Preserve the old teachings
Educate your children

Again her beauty will flourish
