Gas stations with multiple pumps advertising three prices ranging from one seventeen and nine-tenths of a cent to one fifty-five and nine-tenths of a cent – in place of grassy fields mottled with wildflowers; large, bland, department stores with humongous, mocking parking lots littered with street lamps – in place of wooded acres that school youth used to sift through in order to get home. This and more I watched from my smeared taxi window, my gaze as intent as the driver’s. This didn’t seem like the world described when Louis Armstrong sand ‘What a Wonderful World’. This one seemed to contain much more smog.
