I could love you, sweetheart (for critique or reading pleasure)

“I could love you, sweetheart”,
he whispered in the night
While we rested naked
in the pale moonlight

Not a word I uttered,
my breathing even – deep
I layed there disbelieving,
pretending that I sleep

But as you held me close,
I felt your heart beat fast
My resolution to be silent
would not, could not last

“How can you say that?
You do not even know me.”
“I know of you. My heart beats true”,
he murmured in my ear

And as we kissed and touched each other
all through the night
I realized my heart beat strong
and strangely not from fright

I could love you too I thought
before I closed my eyes
Snuggling deep within his arms
to drift in paradise

But sleep did not come
as my mind turned restlessly
I didn’t know what I feared more
– to trust or be lonely

My heart has been busted
but my soul craves it’s mate
I wonder if you know that you’ve
been on my mind of late

Be patient. Don’t give up on me.
I just need time
To see if we are meant to be
– to see if you’ll be mine

So tempt me, tease me, love me
and stay as we were
It’s baby steps I’m taking
‘til I’m absolutely sure

I could love you, sweetheart,
but I will have to stall
Until I know without a doubt
it’s love – not physical.
