Northwest Passage (for Mary)

we walk the white line where

morning has drained the ditches

dayclouds cover our heads

with a secret mantilla of rain

we adore our room

placing the rug, water glass, and curtain

in ritual to correct the quick

glance of wind from the sea

Precious, I could never have dreamed

your loose hair over my

mountain heart

love yielding as the ground

that chooses to powder at our step
