turning away

by all hail the stars

we take our separate paths
among the social foliage
of ladder climbing
searching for a comfortable rung
to use as a bushy cushion
to watch it all
(having already been planted)
sprout, blossom,
be fertilized and wither
with our words, our actions
our wishes both fulfilled
creating a new longing
a new ladder
a new landscape

wondering the whole while
what we’re doing and whether
it’s worth the sacrifice
of the climb to this point

but we merely turn away
from each other
to live again
anew, apart,
but never alone
as we wipe the sweat from our brows
with the hope of
what is to come
of the next few rungs
and maybe water the ground
while we’re at it.
