there’s a metropolis of trash
on my table on the porch.
the pringle’s can is the tallest building,
followed by twin towers
of empty high life bottles.
courthouses and federal buildings
composed of glass ashtrays,
extinguished butts represent lawyers,
judges and defendants.
O suburbs of plastic and ash,
shadowed by huge coffee mug
apartment complexes
(or grain silos)
(depending on where you live)
candles, candles, melted wax
comprise the roads
the ants march down
to drown themselves
in the sugary remnants of coffee
at the bottom of the mugs.

where’s a cigarette when
i need one? all’s that’s
up here are
empty boxes…
