All good points. I wonder if Bush’s plan all along was to exert pressure on Iraq to comply with the Inspectors, and that to do so, Iraq and the world had to believe, truly believe, that George was going to attack.

Hahahahahahah…….I don’t really believe that, but it does raise an interesting question. How do you up the ante and force Saddam to open up to inspections if he doesn’t believe there’s a price to be paid if he doesn’t? Embargo/sanctions have not accomplished that. The next step has to be the threat of force, otherwise we are just closing our eyes to the fact that status quo and all that implies for the Iraqi people will remain.

Some good may come of this yet, providing Bush doesn’t start chaos and can maintain a credible threat against Saddam. The problem is Saddam has shown in the past that once he detects a hole in the armour, he plunges in and exploits it. Perhaps the best thing IS to continue to spout war rhetoric in order to convince Saddam to continue and increase compliance.

In this case, time will not last forever, I fear.
