the old-school thinking that the v.p. doesn’t matter (an opinion still offered by some) ceased to be true when Clinton picked Gore.
they were a team rather than a balance.
1. they won
and 2. Gore became the most active v.p. since the founding fathers — he earned his pay for the first time.
those two facts changed the equation.

cheney gave bush the much-needed gravitas, and i think it’s safe to assume he MORE than earns his keep.

i think kerry will pick someone unusual and interesting (he’s justly confident, not desperate)
— it won’t be edwards, gephardt or graham
— and certainly not wesley clark! (in case its not clear, Clark was Clearly not ready for a national campaign, is a dangerously inexperienced loose canon in the political field, is a polarizing candidate with high negatives, and the only thing he brings to the table — military gravitas — kerry has got in spades {or medals}.)
i could see kerry going outside politics to pick an economist, but not another soldier.

I think it’s going to be (and should be) Bill Richardson, now governor of new mexico.
was the u.s.’s u.n. ambassador under clinton (so he’s strong on the international stage, and a diplomat. he sort-of specialized in negotiating the release of prisinors from various countries, including successfully from saddam insane.)
then he became secretary of energy under clinton (he’s an environmentlist), as well as being the Representive from New Mex for about 15 years.
he’s taught at Harvard and heads up the international Freedom House, which works on releasing prisoners, human rights, and assisting in democracies in emerging nations, sorta like what jimmy carter does.
he’s been nominated for the Nobel Peace prize like 4 times.
oh, and he’s latino, as in spanish.
i’m not sure if there ARE any spanish-speaking people in america, but if there are any, this might help.
