yes. the answer is yes, god is good. just because his standards include (or are tempered by) divine justice doesn’t mean he isn’t intrinsically good.

if he is the creator, he therefore has the right (and obligation) to uphold his standards for the eternal good of the creation. if the creation, despite god’s goodness and warnings to the contrary, continues on a course independant and opposite of his initial intentions for that creation, then god has the right to impose his divine justice on the creation. if he doesn’t do such, then can he rightly be called divine creator or even god? he might then be branded divine hypocrite! in other words, he has to abide by his own justice, even if we choose not to.

and you are also correct, in that ‘flaming fire’ is indeed figurative language for eternal destruction.
