sandwich utterance

I work at a grocery store deli. Tonight, an older man came in and asked for a sandwich on the softest bread we had.
I asked him how we was doing, looking into his gentle face. He moved delicately and spoke softly. He told me his wife was in the hospital, and it didn’t look like she was going to make it.
I said I was very sorry. I wish there was something more I could do than just make him a sandwich. I don’t know what memories he has, or what will happen to him. I don’t know if the sandwich was for him or for his dying wife. It’s weird when these things happen. They break you down for no reason.

Just had to get it off my chest.
