that was a great description, soo. the real question is…where can i buy my U of L sweatshirt? i mean…come on…
you asked how many of my friends are aware of the beats, write or know i write. my answer is: almost all of them. i remember when i really decided to read On The Road. it was at a halloween party. we, a small group of girls, were notorious for throwing these insane parties in a small white house on the corner of campus. two of the most beautiful boys i’ve ever known in my life walked in. one dressed as kerouac, one dressed as ginsberg. they didn’t have to try hard or change their demeanor much. we all got drunk and talked about what they’d read, their motivation…fascinating. the next day i began a metamorphosis.
prior to that all my friends were english, drama or art majors. we used to frequent a bar called “pour richard’s” almost every night. the bar is disgusting and breaking down. wires hanging from the ceiling. but behind the bar are dictionairies and random books of reference…because the people there discuss…debate and really get passionate. once when i was there an older guy sat next to me and said something about my glasses, “i knew chicks that used to wear glasses like that.” and from there i found out he’d hung out with corso…ferlinghetti and the like when he was in san fransicso as a young man. it was and is an amazing bar.
my best friend (who used to post here as san jose) is an artist. my other friends were first introduced to me at a writer’s group meeting. the only one that doesn’t really fit that mold is my boyfriend…even though i think he holds back on himself sometimes. but all are aware i write. partially…i continue to write because of them. we talk about literature sometimes…but usually only when we’re really drunk. ha!
again…kudos on the post. well said.
