of when i first started doing theater seriously. i worked with a director who was really great. he would pretty much let us block our scenes ourselves, instead of saying, “okay, say the line, then take three steps to the left and put your hand on the table.” anyway, i wasn’t really used to that, and while we were working on a scene, he stopped us.

“jamelah, what do you think you’re doing?”

“ummm… i’m not sure.”

“and it shows. listen, if you’re going to do something, don’t do it halfway. mean it. commit to it.”

“uh, ok.”

“you know what you want to do. now do it.”

i stopped being shy that year.
