i personally think that memory has little to do with writing. in fact, a selective memory can sometimes be more useful than a good memory.

of course, if you had no memory of anything, like, say, if you got hit over the head, that might be an impediment.

i think that analysis is crucial. i also think that empathy is crucial (not compassion necessarily, but empathy). all good artists are hypersensitive to their own and others feeling and reactions to things. then analysis comes in, and then the writing means something.

passion is important, but truly i look at it more like a necessity. like i’ll explode if i don’t get this stuff down on paper. passion, to me, implies reveling in the enjoyment of it. sometimes it’s like that, but a lot of times it’s not.
