shakespeare and the king james bible both had a profound influence on english as it is spoken and written today. so in that respect, i suppose they’re both tremendously important to anybody who’s writing in english.

the king james bible is a pretty awesome work of literature, actually. specific parts, like the sermon on the mount (found in matthew), the psalms, and the song of solomon are beautifully poetic. i don’t know how much the writing itself influences me as a writer, but i do appreciate the literary merit of the bible… it’s really well done.

as for shakespeare, well, i’ve been reading the text at the front of one of my versions of his collected works (the norton shakespeare) and there’s a really fascinating passage about his use of language that i’ve been meaning to boil down into an utterances question at some point, but i haven’t had time.

anyway, i’m glad you asked this. good topic, mh.
