I was just reflecting on the wonderful documentary by Ken Burns the other night on PBS about Thomas Jefferson. What a poet and statesman he was. He still represents the heartbeat of democracy. In my mind I was contrasting his eloquent words (that he wrote himself) to the hollow and demogogic rhetoric that our current president is spewing these days (which was written by a crew of speechwriters.) It’s a sad picture that the president of the United States has become a brand name instead of a statesman.
