Okay, further thought yields this:-

I agree with the artist being obliged to feel deeply, it’s an essential job spec, but I find myself balking at “if the artist isn’t capable of loving until he forgets himself …”

I think it should be amended to “capable of working until he forgets himself”.

(or herself, to include myself)
