another diversion from ourselves

to some extent i think it has hurt it. i think the internet for all of it’s wonderful uses and places (litkicks) is just another diversion from our ourselves, our relationships, our communities, our lives.

i saw an add for a computer a few weeks ago that said “make your TV jealous.” i was like “what?” are you fucking kidding me?? do we put that much stock in our televisions??

the internet keeps us away from ourselves. keeps us from turning the pages of a book. we can now read online, you can download books onto your desktop, onto your palm pilot. away goes the paperback and hardcover version of your favorite books as now you can just press the down arrow and scroll to a new chapter.

unfortunately, the masses don’t get on the internet to look up literature. they’re their for porn, shopping, ebay, music downloads, chatrooms and news. not that any of these things are bad, please don’t misunderstand me. i just feel that our eyes are constantly glued to some sort screen, and our minds are slowly melting away.

on the other hand, internet can be highly educational, entertaining, and proactive. there are many sights that are alternative news sources, email makes keeping in touch with family and friends amazingly easy and you can research ANY topic to it’s full extent with a click of your mouse.

i think there are two sides of the spectrum. i enjoy the internet, but i’m glad i only have it at work and not at home. i know myself too well. i have no discipline. instead of picking up a book, i would be here. or somewhere else…

for a large part of my life the internet did not exist, but for all the convenience it offers sometimes i think things were simpler then.
