from same era as Kerouac’s favourites is the pianist Red Garland who played with Davis and Coltrane, as well as the awesome Philly Joe Jones/Paul Chambers rhythm section. I still love the records he made in the fifties, despite the critics moaning that his touch was just too light for them to consider him a true jazz lion.

also – I recall that Lightning Rod may have actually played with the guy, or something? … don’t quote me …
