What about the Tower of Babel?

The Bible would have us believe that these men were building a tower with the goal of reaching God. And God said, “They should not strive to be up here with me,” so he made them all speak different languages so they couldn’t understand each other.

Now, in the first place, we’ve sent people up in jets and rockets much higher than the tallest tower ever built. They didn’t reach God. And why would God not want us up there with him, anyway? And most Christians will now tell you, “Oh, God isn’t really in outer space; that’s just figurative. God is in Heaven, which is more like a different plane or dimension or something.” They have to say that now, but they used to kill astronomers who tried to say it.
So, anyway, they’re building this tower. Why didn’t God just wait until either (1) the air got too thin for them to breath, way up there, or (2) the materials they were using simply couldn’t hold up?
