Hip-hopera

I never thought I would hear it, but I did. Yesterday, I picked up Mr Lif’s “I Phantom” album, and it turns out to be a concept album, in the great tradition of “Tommy” and “The Wall”, except it’s hip-hop instead of rock and roll. As I was listening to it, I saw the whole thing in my head being played out on a Broadway stage, at least at first, but then I started thinking it would work better as a movie. It’s about a guy who robs a store because he’s in dire straits, gets shot, comes back to life and decideds to resurrect hip-hop culture. Then, he wakes up to find it had been a dream and goes on with his miserable and monotonous existence at his $6/hr job. Then he quits and tries to become a hip hop artist instead. The story goes on, and eventually ends with the world being destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. Fans of concept albums, rock-operas, undergroud hip-hop, and even muscials for that matter should check this one out.
