I agree with most of what you say. There was little essence of religion and virtually no philosophy at all except, finally, a tiny flashback to the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus actually said something spiritual.

On the other hand, though, there was a definite feeling of revelation in the movie — the faces of the townspeople, the family members, some of the soldiers and judges. There wasn’t much intelligent religion in the movie, but there was a lot of religion. Kierkegaard and Kerouac would have both liked this movie, I bet.
