Haiku doesn’t have to be a 5-7-5 three line poem…this is a western mind misunderstanding of long standing. Neither Basho or Issa used that form. Also, I would argue (oops, disagree)with the statement that Nature MUST be a theme…haiku, like jazz, evolves, is evolving, and with the western haiku writers, the rules waver. The original masters of haiku broke all the rules that one may think apply. An Aha! moment tho, is necessary.

Truth is, no one really can define what is or is not haiku for like any free form art…all is subjective. (There are no ‘haikus’…haiku is both singular and plural.) I am constantly learning something new about haiku, thanks to Litkicks.
