people living in situations that are often called communes do not endorse that lable, a commune holds with it certain indoctrinal conotations, I think a lot of the youth and others living in such places perfer simply calling their living space a community, the word commune evokes connections to Manson, Jim Jones, Karesh, and so on, to cults; or is that in fact what you want to do your doc on, freaky, ideal based systems of social organization; or do you want to do it on alternative living organization in general, on what the majority of communities are actually like? Many of these places exist in the States and abroad, and although many do have rigid ideals that one must conform to in order to participate in the cohabitial experience of that commune/community/etc, most I think have only loose standards that the members need to adopt such as peaceful living, sharing, organic/natural/vegetarian diet etc.; you should look into a book that is called Beyond Civilization, it is really just a series of page long essays, each page a different idea, dealing with New Tribalism, Communes, Communities, Homeless Communities, it is interesting
