I understand that if you get into the master’s program at Awesome Writer’s University that perhaps it gives you some cred. but does that automatically make your poetry hot? Not necessarily. There will be awesome poets that never went to college (nor published a book) and I wonder if they would be given a fair chance. You never know. I just hope that if you( not “you” a hypothetical you) have a book out, or if you are an English prof. or whatever you are that that doesn’t make publications “automatically” think your average poetry is even better. Or Joe Shmoe who dropped out of 10th grade but who writes a mind-blowing epic poem doesn’t get thrown into the trash because he’s not “noted” or part of a “community”.
Meanwhile, I really respect those magazines that are awesome and have a lot of cred. I also like those magazines that specialise in “blue-collar” writing or who enjoy stories about real life rugged old stories or what have you.
What I’ve noticed, is all magazines are different. They are either looking for people with cred. or no, different ones have different expectations and themes. Just like there are many different writers out there.
Some magazines you submit to, you may have a feeling they are hard to get into if you don’t necessarily have enough cred. But it’s worth a shot anyway, or is it? Share thoughts.
And a haiku about the bald eagle. Gracias.
