week old whiskers
droopy fu man chu
hair to my shoulders
ain’t gettin it cut
three days left
from my overdue
summer vacation
back from the road
the breath of a nation
comin outa my nose
and off my back
here I am in the scratchy ass dawn
I sit here and smoke
thinkin
christ
yesterday I was in Flagstaff
it was blowin snow off the east
side of the mountain
and 16 degrees
the lingy lady clerk at
the gas hop
rasps, cigarette danglin
when I ask
how much snow is comin
“sweeetie,” she rasps again
“it’s a comin from the north
and the east
and that means it’s gonna dump”
so I loaded up on gas and marleboro reds
and two steamin joe’s
took me 15 hours to get back home
the sun
kisses
california
when it snows
and when I awoke
I found myself home
home again
a dog beside
the fire
and all day
to do nuthin
but tell you
how much I missed you
