If you like Didion’s spare prose, take a look at Bret Easton Ellis’s early works such as Less than Zero, Rules of Attraction, and The Informers, which were influenced by PIAIL. I also see some of Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises in PIAIL. I’ve enjoyed Didion’s Democracy and Slouching Towards Bethlehem, but I didn’t care for The Last Thing He Wanted. I enjoy the severe and hopeless tone of PIAIL, and Maria’s attitude.
