Personally, I think that Wolfe was simply trying to capture the essence or spirit of the ‘trip’ as best he could without actually experiencing any of the drugs. From what I have read, I belive he remained straight throughout the writing of the book. If anything, perhaps it was some odd form of contact high.

Doubtful that he was directly influenced by Kerouac, more likely that he would be influenced by Neal Cassady, the bus driver in Kool-Aid, also depicted in ‘On The Road.’ He was sort of the official Muse of the Beat Generation and was in fact the one who inspired Kerouac’s writing style. So it is conceivable that Cassady’s influence could have the same effect on two separate writers.
