in the mail today i received a very beautiful chapbook titled “closed doors and windows” by our very own piph. when i opened the package, i pulled out a very delicate-looking booklet, wrapped in celery green natural handmade paper (maybe mulberry paper?) bound with raffia. a perfect spring surprise on a day when the weather has finally decided to match the calendar — and a thick layer of pollen coats my car. i carefully unwrapped the outer cover to only be greeted on the cover page with one of my photographs (yes, the steam one — thanks piph!). as i began to read the introduction, i realized this book is much like its owner… and looks can be deceiving. underneath this pretty and sometimes fragile exterior lies a soul and poetry as tough as nails… raw, honest, but still tender.

i think the first piece says it all when it starts out: “i like sadness/it seems to fit me better than gloves.” but the pieces in the chapbook are much more than this… they are a personal examination of sadness, longing, love, self, the world, and soul-searching.

i don’t want to give the rest away… but i’m really impressed with the book so far. it’s well thought-out and put together nicely. i’m uncertain on whether piph is selling the book just yet, but i’m sure if you contacted her via email, she’d send you some details.

another great example of many personal projects bubbling in and around litkicks.
