Hate to be a total philistine and bring the tone of the board down, but this book is too fucking long. You can tell it was written in serial form – about halfway through an entire new set of characters appear from nowhere and occupy Dumas’ attention for the next thirteen chapters. It’s slightly ridiculous. Was enjoying it until the Count got to Paris.

But an acknowledged “classic” so must plow on I suppose – even though Kafka’s short stories compilation is staring at me so seductively…

Finished Orwell’s Down and Out in Paris and London. Loved it, very inspiring and insightful and somehow makes me want to emulate him. Look out for me in cardboard city ladies and gents.
