this weekend i read two short books:

one was a collection of short sketches/vignettes from sandra cisneros “The House on Mango Street” This sharp prose describes a young girl’s observations and experiences in several short pieces set in a latino neighborhood in chicago. the language is simple, yet engrossing — the topics are varied, some innocent, some more mature.

the other book was a novel by noted children’s author, judy blume. “Smart Women” is an interesting and tangled story about three women moving on after their divorces in Boulder, Colorado. maybe the best parts of this book are the passages written from the pre-teen/teen children’s perspectives. some would probably call this a trashy novel, but it really wasn’t that trashy. whether that is a disappointment or not, i’ll let you decide.
