I bought ‘The Wind-up Bird Chronicle’ about two years ago, from reading the blurb on the back of the book, straight off the shelf, (added to my decision was the accumulated page count 600+, my family was going on vacation.)

I flew through it, not understanding some parts, terrified at others (the alive skinning, nightmares still lay in my mind’s residue.) I loved the book. I haven’t read any of Murakami’s other works, but in Japanese literature, I’ve just gotten done with Takami’s Battle Royale, which was made into a movie of the same name. Not much for literary depth, but a great pulp romp of absurd pre-pubescent killing fun.

And in Japanese Cinema, I’ve become perhaps too absorbed in Kurasawa’s films, Drunken Angel & Ikiru…

Ryu Murakami sounds interesting, I’ll have to check some of his work out.
