Fairy tales are wonderful escapist reading, anytime.

I couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about the “DaVinci Code”. Christians were all up in arms about it, it is still on all the bestseller lists, and blah blah. I kept picking it up in bookstores, reading the description of the book, and then putting it back down. Finally my AUNT (with a Ph.D.) starting reading it, and I thought, “HUH?”, so I finally broke down and got the tapes so I wouldn’t be left out in the cold in case it was something really controversial. It started out pretty good. Even though the fake French accents on the tape were hysterical, and cracked me up, I was following the plotline and kind of interested. But it just boiled down to a sort of elaborate scavenger hunt by various interest groups. I won’t spoil your pleasure by getting any more specific. I LOVE a good mystery now and then. Some of the modern mystery writers can be quite engrossing, and during times of boredom I would often go to the local mystery bookshop and buy hoards of paperbacks for diversion … this just doesn’t fit into that category at all.

In the movie category, there’s “Stigmata”. You probably saw it already, but if not, go out and rent it. It’s a little crazy, but the clash between the heroine(punker) and the Catholic priest has a good amount of electricity. I liked it because of the wonderful(true) quotes from the one of the Apocalyptic Gospels, on which the movie was based. It’s very entertaining and at the same time, makes you think.
